Safeguarding Alert - Dangerous Chat Rooms
Anonymous chat rooms are online spaces where people can chat with strangers. People can communicate via instant messaging and video chat, some of these platforms use random matching to pair users. Young people are likely to use these chat rooms and chat room apps because they seem fun, and the randomisation of people can be exciting.Chat rooms in general pose risks to children because they may be at risk of seeing distressing or highly sexualised imagery without warning, they may be asked or pressured to remove clothing or reveal personal information, have private conversations on other platforms or be sent malicious links or spam,However, serious concerns have been made about Omegle – Talk to Strangers chat room in particular. Read the Safeguarding Alert about Omegle Chat Room. |
Online Exploitation
There has been an increase in referrals to Essex Police in relation to online exploitation during Covid-19. This issue has also seen a rise year on year in referrals to police. To address this issue the ESCB and partners will be running a campaign towards the end of the summer holidays, targeting young people when spending more time online and reaching parents and professionals in that crucial ‘back to school’ period. Please follow us on social media and support our campaign. |
